[News Today] DOES U.S. HAVE SOMETHING MORE POTENT THAN THE USS CARL VINSON?
INTRODUCTION:

The USS Carl Vinson super carrier has been in news all over and rightly so. The massive carrier is symbol of US clout and projects power far beyond the US mainland. The carrier has an air wing, which is more powerful than the entire air force of most nations. The US has 10 of these Nimitz class carriers.

But is there something in US arsenal, which is even more potent than the mighty USS Carl Vinson? Here we are taking about the Ohio class Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN).
The U S navy has 18 Ohio-class submarines, 14 ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and 4 that were later converted to guided missile submarines (SSGN).

In this video, Defense Updates analyses the two platforms and compares them on the basis of 5 important characteristics.

RANGE/ENDURANCE/SPEED:

Both the USS Carl Vinson and Ohio class are nuclear powered. Being nuclear powered these have practically unlimited range and endurance.
USS Carl Vinson has maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h). Ohio class has a speed of around 20 to 25 knots when submerged.

Hence, none of the two platforms have any distinct advantage over the other in this regard.

EASE OF TARGETING:

The first point required for target any enemy asset is the ability to detect it.
USS Carl Vinson has a displacement of 100000 tonnes, and overall length of 333 m (1,092 feet). To give viewers a perspective, it is about 3 football fields long.
The massive structure can be located from far off. This can be targeted with torpedoes, cruise missiles as well as aircrafts from long distances.

The Ohio-class submarines are the largest submarines ever built for the U S Navy having a displacement of around 17000 tonnes. But Ohio class stays beneath the water surface and has vast area of ocean to hide itself. It is also very silent, making it practically impossible to target from long distances.

EASE OF DEPLOYMENT:

Both of these platforms are not deployed alone but have escorts. In case of USS Carl Vinson, it escorted by destroyers, submarines and multitude of other support vessels.

The Ohio class is also generally escorted by single or two attack submarines however it can move alone if required. The purpose of the attack submarines is to protect the Ohio class from enemy submarines, though in case of eventualities, the Ohio class can take out enemy subs with its own torpedoes.

The logistical challenges of deployment of Carl Vinson is massive and much more compared to Ohio class, giving Ohio class a distinct advantage in this regard.

TACTICAL MISSIONS:

Carl Vinson carries a flight group of more than 60 aircraft, including F-18 jet fighters.
These are twin-engine, supersonic, all-weather carrier-capable 4th generation multirole fighter aircrafts.
They have a payload of 7700 kg (17000 lbs), and can carry ground attack weapons as well as air-to-air missiles. Equipped with precision ammunition, these can carry out multitude of tactical mission.

Ohio class does not have this kind of flexibility. The difference is that, Ohio class deploys only weapons like torpedoes and missiles, whereas Carl Vinson deploys fighter jets, which are themselves weapons platform.

DESTRUCTIVE POWER:

USS Carl Vinson doesn’t have any offensive weapons of its own, but relies on the flotilla of aircrafts for offensive. These fighter jets are designed for tactical role.
Carl Vinson doesn’t carry strategic bombers like B-52H and B-2 which are capable of nuke delivery.

The 14 Ballistic Missile Submarines of Ohio class together carry approximately 50% of the total US active inventory of strategic thermonuclear warheads. It has carries 24 Trident Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles which have range of a range of 11000 km.

Each of these missiles has 12 MIRV (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle) nuclear warheads, and each of these warheads have explosive power equivalent of 300 to 475 kilo tonnes of TNT.

CONCLUSION:

USS Carl Vinson and Ohio class ballistic missile submarines have different roles. The USS Carl Vinson shines in tactical capacity, is more versatile but is also more venerable.
In term of pure destructive capacity Ohio class wins hands down, being capable of strategic nuke delivery.

In war scenario, these 2 platforms will work in conjunction and the duo prov
