[News Today] RUSSIAN ARMATA T14 TANK TO HAVE LARGEST GUN & NUCLEAR SHELL: TOP 5 FACTS
INTRODUCTION:

The Armata T 14 has been in news for sometime now because of state of art technologies used in it. These are as follows:
1. The tank uses revolutionary fully automated and unmanned turret, first for any tank.
2. It is able to move at up to 90 km/h, more than 20 km/h faster than the US main battle tank Abrams M1A2.
3. Armata T 14 will use Afganit Active Protection System. This system uses Active electronically scanned array radar to detect incoming projectiles, and automatically intercept them.

But a recent report indicates a very significant development.
According to the report, the maker of the Armata T 14, Uralvagonzavod, plans to upgun the tank with a new 152 millimeter gun, and also to develop a tactical nuclear shell for the gun. The gun upgrade has been a stated goal for years now, but a nuclear shell is a new and interesting development.

Let us go into the details and understand the consequences.

GUN:

The current Armata tank gun, the 2A82 125 mm, has a maximum effective range of 4.3 miles. The larger 2A83 152 mm gun would have a longer range of around 5 miles.

The 152 mm tank gun could penetrate 1 meter of armor. When the Armata tank gets the 152mm gun, it will be the most powerful cannon to be mounted on a main battle tank of any country ever.
It will be able to knock out any current tank including the American A1M2, German Leopard or British Challenger 2 with a single hit.

No current tank will be able to challenge the Armata tank’s firepower.

NUCLEAR SHELL:

Developing nuclear artillery shells, as a part of the country’s tactical nuclear arsenal, began in the Soviet Union in 1950s.

In the 1960s, the Soviet Army adopted a wide range of tactical nuclear ammunition, including artillery shells for 152 mm to 406 mm caliber guns.

As per experts, it appears that Russia is putting a big effort in miniaturizing the warheads further, so that these can be effectively fired from tanks.

DESTRUCTIVE POWER:

Strategic nuclear weapons are designed to be mostly targeted in the enemy interior away from the war front against military bases, cities, towns, arms industries, and other hardened or larger-area targets to damage the enemy’s ability to wage war.

A tactical nuclear weapon is a nuclear weapon, which is designed to be used on a battlefield in military situations, mostly with friendly forces in proximity and perhaps even on contested friendly territory.
Tactical nukes have much lower destructive power.

To be useful without destroying friendly forces, a nuclear tank round would be “sub-kiloton” in explosive yield, or equivalent to less around 500 tons of TNT.

A 500-ton-yield nuclear shell would create a fireball 400 feet wide and damage tanks and armed vehicles another 1,100 feet in all directions.

CONCLUSION:

This development will make the Armata T 14 one of the most lethal battlefield weapons. A single tank will be able to take out large part of enemy armor.

But this tech has very complex implications. For one, it would make armies more likely to use battlefield nuclear weapons, which could easily escalate to all-out nuclear warfare. Second, unless safety practices are put in place such as withholding arming codes until the last possible moment, tank gun nukes could be used without authorization.
