Talk to Al Jazeera – Muhammadu Buhari: ‘I haven’t failed’ against Boko Haram

Nine months after he came to power, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari received an official welcome from Qatar’s Emir on Buhari’s latest trip of many to boost Nigeria’s standing abroad.

The Nigerian president is seeking support for his crackdown on corruption and to encourage much-needed investment in his country’s ailing economy.
Qatar is the current president of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer.

Low oil prices have a devastating impact on the Nigerian economy, which has long depended on the export of oil.

“We were unable to diversify our economy, hence we are much more disadvantaged by the lower oil prices,” Buhari says.

Buhari tells us he values the institution of OPEC and that “Nigeria will make the necessary sacrifice to remain in OPEC.”

With a chorus of voices, including from the IMF, calling for the Nigerian government to devalue the naira, Buhari says he will not reconsider his insistence on freezing the currency. Buhari says as Nigeria “virtually imports everything, from rice to toothpicks”, it cannot afford to devalue its currency.

“If it is against our national interest, why can’t we go against the IMF advice?” Buhari asks.
Buhari’s election campaign rode on pledges to root out corruption and quash Boko Haram. Yet, Boko Haram remains active in many areas of Nigeria, seemingly able to strike at will.

And many questions are being asked about whether Buhari’s anti-corruption drive is yielding results and if newer forms of corruption are emerging with a freeze on the naira.

President Buhari talks to Al Jazeera about his campaign against graft and why he is adamant he hasn’t failed in the fight against Boko Haram. He also explains why he believes the security of his country is best served by being part of the Saudi-led Islamic anti-terrorism coalition announced in December 2015.

  1. If you are hated it only means one thing " that you are successful" ..The world hates america because they are successful….Nigerians hates the Igbos because the are successful, hardworking and educated… the Igbo manufactured their own weapons during the civil war….the Nigerian dominated Hausa – fulani cant even pass WAEC no to talk of manufacturing tooth pick…

  2. PLEASE WHAT IS THIS MAN SAYING ?, YOU CHOSED SOMEONE TO WORK IN THE PETROLEUM , AND OTHERS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE MONEY/ HIS SALARY IS FOR THE OTHERS IN THE STATE. THEY ARE JUST WPRKING FOR THEMSELVES MONEY MAKING. IT SEEMS TO ME LIKE HE JUST PUT THOSE IGBO IN THE POSITIONS JUST TO GIVE EXCUSES LIKE HE HAS DONE HIS BEST.

THIS SHOWS ME THAT HE DOES NOT EVEN KNOW OR CONSIDER OTHER PEOPLE BESIDES THOSE HE PUT IN THE POSITION AT WORK. I CAN NOT EVEN BELIEVE THAT PRESIDENT IS SAYING THIS. THE WOMAN ASKED HIM QUESTIONS MEANINGFULLY BUT HE SEEMS ANGRY AND NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT AND HE ANSWERED IT ALL ACTING LIKE HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER COULD BE.

HE IS NOW GOING BACK AND FORWARD TO LONDON NOT BECAUSE HE IS SICK BUT BECAESE HE IS AVOIDING THE PROTEST AND IGNORING IT. PRESIDENT TWICE JUST LIKE OBASANJOR WITH NO EVIDENCE OF CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENT IN TIMES OF GOOD ECONOMY, IN THE COUNTRY.

A COUNTRY CAN HAVE GOOD ECONOMY WHEN THERE IS CORRUPTIONS BUT FIGHTING CORRUPTIONS WHEN THERE IS NO GOOD ECONOMY IS MEANINGLESS AND CAN NEVER BE SOLVED. LET THE PEOPLE HAVE GOOD ECONOMY THEN LATER YOU WILL HAVE THE REASON AND THE MEANING OF FIGHTING CORRUPTIONS IN THE COUNTRY.

IF EVERY ONE IN THE COUNTRY IS LIVING GOOD VIA THE SYSTEM , I CAN ASURE THAT EVERY ONE WILL JOIN HANDS TO WORK AS POLICE AND WHISTLE BLOWER IN ORDER TO FIGHT THE CORRUPTION.

THIS IS THE WAYS TO CHANGES.

  3. Nice interview.
but Nigerians abroad should. not praise him cos the country is presently in Recession.
, and a worse economic condition compared with past administrations.

  4. Please my Nigerian brothers I beg you give Pres. Buhari a chance and give him all the necessary support to clean up and re-organise your beautiful country. Bear in mind that the highest office in Nigeria can be occupied by one person at a time. Yes, the man is under pressure but if all Nigerians behave like this Aljazeera silly cow with a terrible attitude, everything will come to zero.
In fact I must congratulate Pres. Buhari as an African man, a soldier, an elder and head of state for putting up with such silly attitude and total lack of respect and bad manners from this stupid woman, even for 3 minutes. I for one don't have time for silly cows like this. Some of us in Zimbabwe are crying for a leader with half the leadership qualities I see in Pres. Buhari.

  5. This man called Buhari is sick. How dare he say Nigeria Christians should go fight Boko Haram and Militants. Does that mean there is no Christian among Nigeria armies?? Buhari don't deserve to be on that seat at all. Talking trash.

  6. that guy is just as corrupt as all the rotten lot…HOW U GONNA JUSTIFY LOOTING YOUR COUNTRY'S RESOURCES TO SCHOOL YOUR KIDS OVERSEAS INSTEAD OF THEM DEALING WITH HIS SUB-PAR CONDITIONS HE'S SUBJUGATING HIS PEOPLE WITH…FOOLING AFRICAN LEADERS I TELL YA

  7. Buhari is a fool, English puppet, Chinese puppet, so are all the leaders that have every ruled Nigeria guess they learned nothing from the white men huh? Now the Chinese will enslave them again just like the whites did and I hope it'll be like colonial times maybe they will learn. Dumb idiot.

  8. Way to go President Buhari. !!! Let me start by saying; Henceforth, I would not recommend any African Leader to accept or welcome and entertain any foreign (outside Africa) media interview. As far as I am concerned, they are all "Stooges and Spies" and whose main concern and interest is to create divison, dissension and disdain amongst African people. This interview has brought shame to Al Jazeera, and has further exposed this unscruplous medium, as a British-European brainwashing machine, An absolute display of arrogance and conspiracy. The sole purpose of this Al Jazeera interview is to deepen the effect of the "mind virus" already planted in the minds of Africans since "pre and post" colonial era! The entire interview advocates Disunity, Dependency and Control. From pulling out of Opec, devaluing the Nigerian currency, IMF control, Importation of unnecessary foreign drugs and goods, to brainwash Education, Internal Governmental affairs, senseless advocacy for the seperation of Biafra and the "unrealistic existence" of Boko Haram. The only score I will award to the interviewer is on foreign education. The lesson for Mr Buhari and other African Leaders to learn and develope from, is the point on Education. Why send your children overseas…Europe and America, to go live and study rather than improving the educational system, quality and standards within your own home territories, so that other world heads of states's children could come study and learn from the Original People, The African People?  If you are a "deep thinker", you will clearly see and realise how this interview was strictly about trying relentlessly to succumb the Dignified, Enlightened, Experienced, and Proud (DEEP) African Leader.Proud of you, President Buhari, and More Blessings upon you.

  9. No one but God almighty can build a nation. Look, NIGERIA IS 18 IN NUMEROLOGY. Just google numerology number 18 and compare it with china- 15, Canada-15 and other countries with good numbers. Please lets add a letter to our current name Nigeria it might give us the success we have been waiting for.

  10. The problem Buhari has are his team. In a way i think the man has genuine interest of Nigeria at heart, but it is easy to be imprisoned by a team that has another interest(s). The people surrounding Buhari don't just have it and Buhari himself doesn't have it. Changing a country require much more than discipline, it required patriotism, intelligence and a team that are passionate and has the same interests as the president.

  11. President Buhari I pray that God give you the wisdom to to rule this tough and difficult Nation Nigeria. may light overcome darkness and good overcome evil.May they be brought to shame that seek to tear apart what God has put together. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Long live President Buhari.

  12. President Buhari's inability to tell a lie with a straight face, to me, is a true test of his integrity and certainly proves his potential to make his mark as one of the best presidents Nigeria has produced to date. With that said, he needs to work with his advisers and close aids on beefing up his interviewing/general public speaking skills. While he exudes an admirable level of confidence and displays a healthy knowledge of the crucial facts (something that can't be wholeheartedly said about the past president), he does have a tendency to come off as being defensive and short with his answers when asked uncomfortable questions. This is something that is more likely to hurt his public image (both nationally, and especially internationally), rather than help it.

  13. 85% of oil block owners are Northerners and to remind you, Mike Adenuga's Con oil has six oil blocks , each of them produces more than 200,000 barrels of crude per day, at the recent dollar rate $39.00 dollars x 200,000 barrels per day, my friends kindly do the math. Jonathan don't own any neither Diezani, If I where to change this country I will start by handing over all oil blocks owned by Nigerians to the FG, am not an PDP or APC none of them worth my vote, because they don't practice true democracy in Nigeria but authocracy and gradually we are withnessing a military rule as in the south south all Tompolo relatives are been chansed by the EFCC while them Obasanjo, Babangida, Atiku, Abubakar, Abdulsalami, Abiola's, Buhari's are relaxed, my people Fela was right, cos he stroked including Buhari in his music, for the record Russia was divided into five countries, so Biafra are not doing anything wrong, I wonder how real people like Ojukwu saw this way back in the sisties, we are not One Nigeria, I feed the nation, I have the oil, and others owns the blocks, and I cant stand up for my right when I did they said I am corrupt so I asked who is entitled to loot Nigeria's money, North , south , east or West. Corruption is evil, bad and wrong I will never ever support it, but stop the winch hunting and bring every one to book including your self for coup plotting and killing of innocent people.

  14. Thank you all for your contributions, Abacha Loothed over $150 billion dollars and our system still worked, we are not counting what Babangida looth, or the oil blocks he assigned to his associates, Obasanjo did same, and Abdulsalami recovered Abacha looths and did worst, but none of them crumbled the economy because we have had leaders that strieve for the betterment of Nigeria even with there heavy corrupt image. But on this issue all we here is the former government looted too much for the country to move forward, so I asked, who has the biggest assets in Nigeria Tinubu an APC person, never tried, never will, who looted Nigeria most Babangida, never tried never will, who assigned more oil blocks to his friends even his girl friend Babangida never tried, rather Buhari paid him a visit, even though Buhari was suppose to face Genocide for the coup he ploted to take over a civilian government from Shagari no body is talking of it, what a leader we choose, he lacks administrative knowledge simple.

  15. keep deceiving yourself Anne. Nigeria will never end. Those who have tried we all know where they are : in the grave or in jail. Your Biafra is just but mirage. Even if Nigeria were to end, do you imagine it would be under general buhari?

  16. Thank u Martine Dennis for the wonderfull interview, its unfortunate that the stupid Nigeria president has no answer to ur question…He talks out of point just like his people.

  17. less stop this biafra of a thing i see no reason why the igbo want to creat their country i dont think leaving together now we are disburning each other, we need igbo igbo need us
